Thank you for visiting our baby-wearing tips page. Our goal is to provide you with a carefully constructed, easy to use product that supports your connection to your child. New Native Baby Carriers are designed to make baby-wearing simple and comfortable.
If you are having trouble wearing the carrier you may want to take a look at the following advice. But first, make sure that both you and your baby are well-rested, fed, and in a quiet, familiar environment. It can be a good idea to practice putting your baby in the carrier while sitting on the edge of a bed or chair. This position will allow you to be more stable and have better arm coordination. Breastfeeding in the carrier can also be a positive reinforcement and bonding experience for you and your baby. Other Ways of Carring Your Baby
Wearing Your New Native Baby Carrier®
To wear the carrier:
1) First check to see that it is correctly folded.
2) Next, put your left arm through the carrier. It should now be worn from your right shoulder to left hip, like a sash across you with the label facing outward on your left-hand side.
3) Grab the top of the bottom seam with your left hand and pull it toward your right-hand side, the bottom seam should be in line with your belly button.
4) Make sure that the fabric of the carrier is flat across you shoulder and back.
5) Using both hands, pull the two edges of the pouch open.
6) Next, cradling the baby in your left arm, lower the baby into the carrier, placing the baby’s bottom on the seam. (Opposite for left handed)
7) Check that your baby is comfortably and securely in the carrier and start moving around.
* The carrier can be worn on either shoulder.
New Native Baby Carrier® Fit Guidelines
When sized correctly, the carrier will fall within your center of gravity or about halfway between your belly button and where your leg bends at your hip. A correctly sized carrier will feel comfortable and secure.
Carrying in your center of gravity is the most comfortable place for your body to carry weight for long periods of time. Your center of gravity is where the body naturally distributes the weight of the baby during pregnancy.
To check for the correct size you need to try on the carrier with the weight of your baby in it. If you are pregnant or adopting you can try a bag of flour for weight. During pregnancy try the carrier with the bottom seam at your hip rather than over your belly and see where the lowest point of the carrier hangs in relation to your belly button and the bend where your leg meets your hip.
For a comfortable fit, the lowest point, which is generally the baby’s bottom within the carrier, should not hang below the bend where your leg and hip meet. If it is too long you may bump the baby when you are walking, and put some strain on your back. The carrier may be too small if the bottom of it hangs above your belly button.
*If you are short in your upper body, the carrier may need to fall lower than the bend, where your leg and hip meet. The carrier will open approximately 5-7 inches when it is the correct size.
If you have the correct size and are wearing the carrier correctly, you should get a sense that your baby feels safe and secure inside the pouch and that it is comfortable on you. Please call our customer service professionals with any questions or concerns at 800-646-1682. We are happy to help.
